Read an excerpt from Chapter One as a class. After reading the excerpt aloud in class the students are in groups that is designed to go over vocabulary for complex words found throughout the text and excerpt. After the class has finished the spinner activity I will ask them how they are doing. This is where my first formative assessment will come into play, Zero to Five check. The Zero to Five check allows for me to see where the entire class is at with the vocabulary. This check will guide the rest of my review in days to come of the vocabulary.
For the excerpt the class would read page 10 (the last paragraph) through page 14 (ending with "Better he does it out in the woods than in the district).

#HASHTAGS will be used as an Exit Slip on Day 4. I will model for the class using a vocabulary word from Chapter 3. The students will be numbered 1-5 each number will correlate with a Vocabulary word from Chapters 4 & 5. The students will then have to define the word and clarify it with hashtags. The first hashtag requires the student to apply the word to a place/activity. The second hashtag has the student use the word in a phrase. Lastly, the student must connect to the word in the final hashtag.
This will be a common exit slip I will have the students do before they are able to leave the classroom. This type of reading inventory will be essential in my classroom as this allows for me to evaluate what they learned, what new kind of connection they have created, and how they will implement what they have learned in the future. Students learn so much in the time that they are discussing what they have read. They get new perspectives and maybe a few new connections to their own lives. I find it very influential for how I teach. So by using an exit slip I can use what the students say to help me guide the upcoming discussions.
On day 4 I would have the students hand in this Exit worksheet. The exit worksheet would be handed out to the students before the class discussion has been started, allowing them to make notes throughout the class. The discussion of the day is based on social media's influence on our lives. By having the students fill out this 3-2-1 Opinion worksheet I am using the formative assessment to look at what the main facts the students learned throughout the discussion. I will also be able to look at common questions students had and be able to address them the next day in class. Lastly, the opinion allows for me to see what type of connections the students are forming with the text.
If there is a day where we need more vocabulary review this is an option for the students. Word Battleship is a great alternative to the traditional vocabulary lessons because it adds a tad bit of mystery to the lesson. Once someone has guessed where the word is they do not actually sink the ship unless they can define the word once they find it.
